What are vows?
Marriage vows are promises couples make to each other during a wedding ceremony.
What are their origins?
The official recording of marriage vows are believed to have started in the Roman Empire around 17BC - 476AD, where lower class citizens whose marriages were called "free" marriages would make and keep the vow of marriage to one another by mutual consent or in other words as agreed by the parties involved, whilst the wealthy would sign legalized property rights documents. Biblically of-course in Genesis 2 vs 23 we all know of the classic vow made by Adam to his Eve as soon as he set his eyes on her.
When are vows made?
As mentioned in the above definition vows are usually made by couples one to another at their wedding ceremony, but in essence vows begin way before the wedding day when two "love birds" perhaps begin to fall in love with each other and start making life commitment promises to each other.
this leads us into the crux of this blog...
Why vows?
In my own opinion vows are not only lip service exchange of words between two people, but rather communication of "hearts out of love". In this day and age do we perhaps still understand the implication and meaning of heart to heart communication? I will leave the answering to you. Therefore let me end this by saying:
Vows are an opportunity to let the inner person speak out to the other inner person;
Vows are what is meant to make the two go further in their marriage when they would otherwise rather quit;
Vows are supposed to make you smile when you are alone;
Vows are supposed to make you smile together;
Vows are meant to keep you together and not apart
